Healthy Happy Hour: Cuckoo-for-Coconut Water

By Lyle Topping

To all the vodka soda drinkers out, you may be interested in adding this to your go to cocktail. Coconut water is not only refreshing but has numerous health benefits. The Cleveland Clinic lists off the six major health benefits like aiding in hydration, low in calories, kidney stone prevention, and even helps with healthy skin. For the purposes of this though we will focus on helping with hydration.

We all know the worst part of a long day at the pool or long night at the bar is waking up the next morning hungover. The Nation Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states, “Alcohol suppresses the release of vasopressin, a hormone produced by the brain that sends signals to the kidneys causing them to retain fluid. As a result, alcohol increases urination and excess loss of fluids. The mild dehydration that results likely contributes to hangover symptoms such as thirst, fatigue, and a headache.”  This is where coconut water comes into play. By adding this ingredient to your simple cocktails, it can help combat the hangover in the morning.

Recipe:

  • 5 oz clear alcohol of choice (vodka, gin, or white rum)
