In Alachua County, we are required to wear face masks before entering businesses, but outside of our county, that’s not always the case. Recently, many major stores have decided to mandate face masks while shopping.

Some of these stores include Walmart, Walgreens, Starbucks, Publix and more.

“We support the new CDC guidance that urges the use of face covers to help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Kevin Ban, Walgreens chief medical officer, in a press release on July 16.  “As cases continue to rise in many parts of the country, it’s critical we, as businesses and members of the community, do everything we can.”

Target will join the lot by requiring face masks while shopping on August 1, according to USA TODAY. And Publix will do the same, starting July 21.

In a press release on July 16, Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous said, “With the number of coronavirus cases continuing to grow and current CDC guidance indicating face coverings can help slow the spread of COVID-19, we believe requiring face coverings in our stores is another way we can do our part to help protect our communities.”

If you do not have a mask when entering a store, some establishments are offering free masks upon entrance; however, do not count on this convenience. It is best to have a mask with you at all times.

It is best to call or research a store’s mask policy before visiting!
