As you settle into your at-home routine, you maybe find yourself in the market for some new entertainment. You’ve worked your way through the pile-up of Netflix originals (hello Tiger King), so it’s time for something else to unwind and enjoy. Fortunately, musicians are now bringing their music to you. With concerts and tours around the country being canceled, artists are turning to at-home concerts and streaming, making it easier than ever to see your favorite artists.
Ben Gibbard
Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie, a popular alt-rock band, is one of the biggest and most consistent names in the new world of at-home concert streaming. His weekly Live From Home shows cover classics and original songs and takes audience requests. Donations go to MusiCares, a non-profit that provides critical assistance for the music community. Gibbard recently released a song ‘Life In Quarantine’, to accompany this new pace of life.
Drew and Ellie Holcombe
Husband and wife Americana duo Drew and Ellie Holcombe host nightly ‘Kitchen Covers’ on Facebook. The two play stripped-down folk and Americana covers from the comfort of their kitchen nightly at 9 p.m. While performances are free, 20% of any tips or donations made through Venmo or PayPal will be donated to the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund, and the rest goes to cover lost wages for Drew and Ellie Holcombe’s touring band and crew.
Heartwood Soundstage
Local music venue Heartwood Soundstage and First Magnitude Brewery are hosting a live broadcast in support of local musicians. The virtual concert will feature Richy Stano, Sam Pacetti, The Divebombers and Trabajara Belo. The benefit concert will be streamed from Heartwood’s state-of-the-art downtown soundstage and is sure to be high-quality audio. Tune in Friday at 7 p.m.!
Jon Foreman
Jon Foreman, frontman of the popular alt-rock band Switchfoot, posts daily in his #SongsFromHome series. From classic Beatles to 1900s hymns, Foreman sings covers and originals in a one-man acoustic show. These videos are completely free on the Switchfoot YouTube channel, where he says “I don’t have the answers, but I do know that love and melody can remind us to have hope and to be kind to one another.”
With concerts and tours canceled for the foreseeable future, artists and venues alike are turning toward streaming at-home concerts as a way to generate money, but also to continue doing what it is they love. Take the time to find your favorite artist on social media and see if they have a virtual concert series or digital fundraiser.
